About Sunshine 811
Making Florida the Safest Place to Dig
Sunshine 811 is a not for profit corporation designed to provide essential information on safe digging and prevent damages to underground facilities in Florida. The organization was established in 1993 with the adoption of the “Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act,” Chapter 556, Florida Statutes.
Underground facility owners and operators are required by law to be members of Sunshine 811 and fund its operations. Florida’s law requires anyone planning to dig to contact Sunshine 811 at least two full business days before breaking ground.
When Sunshine 811 receives a locate request, it notifies its members so they mark their underground facilities at the planned dig site. Contacting Sunshine 811 is not only the law but helps prevent hefty fines and repair costs due to service outages, injuries, environmental contamination and property damage.
Sunshine 811’s mission is to promote and facilitate excavation safety and underground utility damage prevention to make Florida the safest place to dig. Sunshine 811’s functions include:
Processing excavators’ dig site and contact information
Sending the dig site information to member utility companies
Operating positive response, a simple way for members and excavators to communicate
Educating excavators, members and homeowners on the 811 process
